Joseph Barca Sr.
It’s not often that someone gets to celebrate their 99th birthday.
Joseph Barca Sr. of Glassboro, NJ, decided the best place to celebrate was at his barbershop, where he has worked every day since 1955. Joseph started cutting hair at the tender age of 10, seven years after moving to New Jersey’s Heartland from Sicily. Barca’s Barbershop is a community staple in Elmer, NJ. Located across the street from the First Bank of Elmer, Joseph’s barbershop has remained a beloved spot to get a good haircut and congregate. Even though some of his regulars have moved out of the community, they are loyal to their favorite barber, continuing to visit and get haircuts. The shop is only closed on Wednesdays, “in case you want to go to the doctor.”
Joseph served as an Air Force mechanic in Guam during World War II. We would like to thank him for his service to his community and country, and are proud to name Joseph Barca Sr. a Heartland Hero.
