Theatres in New Jersey’s Heartland

Broadway Theatre of Pitman

Originally opened in 1926, The Broadway Theatre of Pitman brings New York City quality shows to New Jersey’s Heartland. Throughout its history, The Broadway Theatre of Pitman has received dozens of famous celebrities to perform and play on their stage. Today, the theatre is bringing a piece of Pitman’s history back to life by hosting an array of live performances, concerts, special events and movies.

The Eagle Theatre of Hammonton

The Eagle Theatre, South Jersey’s only year-round professional Equity theatre, is dedicated to redefining regional theatre through innovation, enlightened production techniques, and the development of eclectic theatrics. The Eagle Theatre opened in 1914 and functioned as a silent movie theatre and playhouse until 1944. The Eagle Theatre’s origins may have been as a theatre, but throughout its storied history, it has served as everything from a church to a storage facility. In 2006, the building was on the verge of demolition. It was then that Tracy Petrongolo, the head of the Hammonton’s arts and cultural committee, evaluated the building and deemed it worthy of preservation. Thanks to the work of numerous volunteers, The Eagle Theatre, which is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)3 charity, reopened in June of 2009. Since then, it has grown into “an artistic epicenter of the South Jersey Region.”

Landis Theater of Vineland

The Landis Theatre of Vineland was established in March of 1937. The Art Deco theatre showcased a variety of Vaudeville acts until it closed its doors in 1987. The theater was able to reopen in 2010 after Vineland’s Main Street Redevelopment Plan helped to return it to its original splendor. The Landis Theatre runs several shows throughout the year, including professional entertainment, national touring artists, cultural and multi-cultural enrichment programs, dance, classical music, jazz, doo-wop, musicals, drama, local talent performances, and more. Levoy Theatre of Millville

Millville’s High Street has been home to the Levoy Theatre for more than a century. The Levoy Theatre first opened in 1908 with admission prices starting at 25 cents. Back then, the theatre played silent flickering films, which were accompanied by a vocalist or pianist in the background. Although the Levoy Theatre had, for the most part, played motion pictures films up until 1958, Simon Cherivtch would change all of that. Cherivtch began to introduce live, big name entertainment to the Levoy Theatre stage. Today, the theatre presents a mix of movies and live performances, including classics like The Nutcracker Ballet.
