In Berlioz’s perfumed song cycle, each poem comes to languorous life, soaring or melting by turns, especially with Cecelia Hall’s richly-hued voice and magnetic artistry. Brahms’ final symphony miraculously deepens with each tone and yet simultaneously somehow shimmers with almost piercing luminosity. The conclusion is one of the most shattering in all of music.
