The Artist As Entrepreneur Series Provides South Jersey Artists The Skills They Need To Thrive
Workshop Series: October 2018 – April 2019
Location: Kramer Hall of Stockton University
30 Front St, 3rd Floor, Hammonton, NJ
Presented by the South Jersey Cultural Alliance in partnership with the NJ State Council on the Arts, the Artist as Entrepreneur Series provides the business skills, tools and networking opportunities artists need to build financially healthy and sustainable careers. Over the course of seven months, through two half-day workshops covering financial management and six evening skill-based workshops, South Jersey artists will gain insight and knowledge from other successful professional artists who have built and maintained viable careers. Artists have the option to purchase the entire seven-month workshop series for $100 or per workshop [$20 for a half day workshop or $10 for an evening workshop]. Full workshop details are available on our website www.sjca.net.
“The New Jersey State Council on the Arts recognizes that it takes not just talent – but perseverance and business expertise to make it as an artist in today’s market. We are thrilled to be able to help provide opportunities like this one to artists, so they can further develop their professional expertise and networks. SJCA’s Artist as Entrepreneur series will provide New Jersey artists – especially those in Southern New Jersey – with the opportunity to learn the business end of being an artist, make connections with those who can help and support them, and offer coaching, advice and guidance to develop a sustainable business to complement their practice. We are very excited to learn more and see what develops from the New Jersey artists who take advantage of this opportunity.” -Danielle Bursk, Director of Artist Services, New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
This program is presented by teaching artists of Creative Capital who support artists across the country through funding, counsel and career development services. Since 2003, Creative Capital has worked with more than 18,000 artists who are enriching over 800 creative communities across the country.
“New Jersey Community Capital is delighted to support SJCA and the Artist as Entrepreneur programming. Through our THRIVE SJ initiative, NJCC is targeting projects or activities that will help enhance the impact of community-based organizations in achieving their community and economic development missions. The impact of this workshop series will support approximately 40+ artists and help them become more entrepreneurial-minded and financially savvy to transition their artistry into a small business enterprise.” — Laura Wallick, Program Manager, New Jersey Community Capital
Upon completion of the series, artists will take with them: a personalized plan of action based on their own identified career goals, a road map for funding their work (including improving fundraising materials and working with partners), new perspectives on how to approach presenting and writing about their work for fundraising purposes, an increased understanding of their personal and professional financial options, and a new framework for understanding of the value of their time and how it relates to the pricing of their work.
This program series is inspired by and dedicated to Donald Ehman, recently retired Director of Artist Services at the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, who over decades has helped so many artists in New Jersey further their careers.
