Reporter Dana Arschin Of Fox 5 News (New York), Granddaughter Of A Holocaust Survivor, Will Tell Her “Poppy’s” Story In Zoom Workshop Presentation On May 19

VINELAND, NJ –As more and more children of Holocaust Survivors have told their stories and the stories of their parents, the challenges and responsibilities for keeping the memories alive are now being shouldered by the grandchildren—the third generation.
We will hear the story of one such grandchild, Dana Arschin, a reporter for Fox 5 News in the New York/Tri-State area, as she tells her story and the story of her grandfather—her “Poppy”—in a Zoom presentation on Wednesday, May 19, from 8 to 9:15 p.m., The presentation is free and open to the public.
This presentation, followed by a question-and-answer session, is presented by South Jersey Holocaust Coalition and by New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, with additional funding from One Jewish Community—Jewish Federation of Cumberland, Gloucester & Salem Counties.
Dana is member of 3GNY, Descendants of Holocaust Survivors, the mission of which is to serve as a forum to perpetuate the memory of the Holocaust, telling the story of their families, survivors and victims.
She is also is an Emmy Award winning reporter, for Fox 5 News in the New York/Tri-State area. In her previous reporting assignments for News12, she won the first of her two Emmy Awards and also won first-place awards two years in a row at the prestigious New York Press Club.
In 2018, as a reporter for Fox 5, she traveled to Poland to learn more about her relatives who were murdered in the Holocaust. She shot, wrote, and produced three films. She won a second New York Emmy Award for one of those short films, entitled The Forgotten Camps.
Dana graduated Cum Laude from the University of Delaware with a double major in Spanish Studies and Communication. She has a Master’s Degree with honors in Broadcast Journalism from the New York Institute of Technology and is fluent in Spanish, conversant in Portuguese, and a beginner in Mandarin.
She is the proud granddaughter of a Survivor of Auschwitz Concentration Camp. In classrooms and at other presentations she tells the story of her grandfather who, while prior to Auschwitz, was a prisoner in Kolmar, a forced-labor camp in Germany. Nazi guards caught him hiding rotten potatoes that he had found while working in the sewers. He was beaten severely and then forced to dig his own grave. Most recently, Dana made a presentation to hundreds of virtual participants for 3GNY,
The chairperson of Holocaust Coalition is Harry Furman, a former Social Studies teacher who pioneered the first New Jersey high school semester course on the Holocaust and genocide, The Conscience of Man.
Educators, students, and the public are invited to take part and, for professionals, 1.5 Professional Development (PD) hours will be granted by New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education.
