Atlantic City Rail Line Is Back on Track
The Atlantic City Rail Line resumed full service with improved schedules on May 12, 2019, two weeks ahead of the originally-planned May 24th reopening and in time for the busy Memorial Day Weekend and the start of the summer season at the Jersey Shore.
However, the Atlantic City Rail Line, which closed for repairs and upgrades on September 5, 2018, is so much more than just a convenient way to travel between Atlantic City and Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station. It is a critical part of the public transportation network within New Jersey’s Heartland, connecting to rail stations and other modes of public transportation in Cherry Hill, Pennsauken, Atco and Lindenwold in Camden County and Absecon and Egg Harbor City in Atlantic County. It provides an important public transportation option for both business commuters and employees needing to transfer to the Heartland’s many affordable bus and commuter shuttle routes.
Safety changes were paramount to work done by New Jersey Transit. Yet, they were not all the state was able to achieve. The rail line’s safety improvements go hand-in-hand with schedule changes that provide more frequent and reliable service. For example, during the week, there are more early morning trains to Philadelphia, with the number of pre-Noon arrivals increased from three to five. intended to provide “more reliable and frequent service” on the line, there is now a maximum wait time of two hours between trains. Similar schedule improvements were made for weekends.
