From Arts & Crafts to Food & Wine and Fun for the Kids, there’s a world of great events, festivals, fairs and fitness events in New Jersey’s Heartland. Here is a listing of all of the upcoming events.
GALLOWAY – American folk great, Lucy Kaplansky will headline a concert Friday, Feb. 3 rd , 8 p.m. at Stockton University Campus Center Theater to benefit the Stacy Moore Hagan Memorial Estuarine Internship Operating Fund at the University.
Starting out singing in Chicago bars and barely out of high school, Lucy Kaplansky took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, The Roches, and others. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact, The New York Times said it was “easy to predict stardom for her.”
The concert benefits a memorial undergraduate marine science internship operating fund named for Stockton graduate and former West Creek resident Stacy Hagan. Two $2,500 scholarships provide an eight-week summer research experience for students interested in pursuing graduate studies or entry-level technician positions in marine science. Opportunities are available at the Rutgers University Marine Field Station in Tuckerton and the Stockton Nacote Creek Marine Field Station in Port Republic.
Stacy Hagan was a marine research scientist at the Rutgers University Marine Field Station for 17 years when she succumbed to breast cancer in 2007. “Her successful career in marine science was made possible by a cooperative internship offered through Stockton and we want other hard-working Stockton students who enjoy field work to follow in Stacy’s footsteps,” said Roland Hagan, Rutgers University Marine Field Station Operations Coordinator, who established the scholarship in 2008 in memory of his late wife.
According to Hagan, 15 students have received $37,500 in scholarship monies to date through the Stockton Foundation.
The February 3rd benefit concert is presented by Folk Across the Street productions. The ticket price will support the internship program. Tickets for the show are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $10 with student ID. For tickets go to www.LucyKaplansky.com/shows and “buy tickets”.
