This musical, based on the novel 7 1/2 Cents, ran on Broadway in 1954 and was revived in 1973 and again in 2006, taking Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Revival. Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are anything but peaceful as sparks fly between new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their romance suffers as the workers demand a 7 1/2 cent raise, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well. Eventually management and labor sing in tune with crowd-pleasing songs like, “Steam Heat,” “Hernando’s Hideaway” and “Hey There.”
