DESCRIPTION:Popa Chubby w/ special guest Lower Case Blues\nApril 1st\, 2022 @8:00 pm \nPopa Chubby\, born Ted Horowitz\, has been hard rocking the blues in his fierce and soulful way for more than 30 years. Over the course of a career that dates back to 1994\, he has been a force of to be reckoned with on the guitar\, and his tempestuous\, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head\, tattooed arms\, a goatee and a performance style he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy\, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters\, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson\,” Popa Chubby is an endearing character who is one of the genre’s most popular figures. \nHis career has always been about moving forward and carving a place for himself in the imposing terrain of the music business\, overcoming odds to continue growing and maturing as a creative force. He has built a constantly increasing base of fans across the world\, where in many territories he is a star. A native New Yorker\, Horowitz’s first gigs were in the NYC punk scene as a guitarist for what he reflects was a “crazy Japanese special effects performance artist in a kimono called Screaming Mad George who had a horror-movie inspired show.” Right from the start he was immersed in rock ‘n’ roll as theater\, and learned from George and others playing CBGB’s at the time that included the Ramones\, the Cramps\, Richard Hell\, whose band\, the Voidoids he joined that rock ‘n’ roll should be dangerous. He reflects\, “Musicians like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols weren’t just bands. They were a threat to society.” \nThe Blues however was the foundation of his playing style. He recalls\, “Since I’d grown up on Hendrix\, Cream and Led Zeppelin\, when I started playing blues in New York clubs I understood that the blues should be dangerous\, too. It wasn’t just from playing in punk bands. Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters were dangerous men. They’d cut or shoot you if they thought it was necessary\, and Little Walter packed a gun and wouldn’t hesitate to use it. That danger is a real part of the Blues and I keep it alive in my music.” \nPopa Chubby is his own man for better or worse. He reflects\, “I’m living in a wild time\, and that is where the inspiration is drawn from. There are my issues\, but the picture is much bigger than me and my situation. DESCRIPTION:Threads of Time & Wisdom: Chilean Textiles & Horse Hair Miniatures \nApril 1 through November 14\, 2022\, Thursday through Sunday\, 11am to 4pm \nIn the WheatonArts Down Jersey Folklife Center\, this exhibition provides a visual comparison between traditional textiles of two indigenous communities of Latin America—the Chilean Mapuche people and the Guatemalan Maya. Both Mapuche and Maya artists create artworks about identity and cultural heritage in a modern interconnected world\, weaving ancestral knowledge and wisdom into present-day ways of life. The story of the spider who taught the first woman how to weave in the mythological past is present in both cultures. Many designs and motifs are interpreted in similar ways. However\, the creative process reflects differences in techniques and materials employed in the two different geographic regions. Revealed in the exhibition are the complex characters of Mapuche and Mayan garments with weaving patterns interpreted in the context of a broad spectrum of regional\, social\, ritual\, and aesthetic meanings and viewed from the perspective of our shared humanity. \nThe exhibition also features Chilean horsehair (crin) miniatures of religious and secular objects—flowers\, animals\, or human figures—that aim to engage viewers in a conversation about the dynamics of living traditions over time\, their social\, artistic\, and ritual messages conveyed by the artworks and by the nature of the creative process. They have toured to other countries such as England\, Canada\, South America and Japan just to name a few. With over 2000 performances in over 100 cities\, Draw The Line is sure soon to be in a venue near you! \nDuring a January 1998 interview\, Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler singled out Draw The Line as the best of the Aerosmith tribute bands. On Boston’s biggest Rock radio station 104.1 WBCN\, disc jockey Nick Carter quoted “I’ve seen Draw The Line! They ARE Aerosmith!” The band is popular on the college circuit as well\, and has been interviewed by several Boston-based college radio stations\, such as Brandeis University’s 100.1 WBRS. DTL has also had featured articles in international fanzines\, Boston area newspapers such as The Patriot Ledger\, The Boston Globe\, The Mariner papers\, etc. \nThey are the only tribute band who has been featured on the Official Aerosmith Website as well as that of Aerosmith’s Official Fan Club. With support and accolades from Aerosmith themselves\, as well as journalists\, top DJs\, and fans worldwide\, its no wonder that Draw The Line is recognized as a one-of-a-kind. “A professional show band in a league of their own amongst tribute acts\, and of a caliber that is unparalleled in the tribute genre” says reporter\, Joe Reardon of the Mariner Newspaper Group. \nThe group’s fanatical popularity was evident the evening of January 1\, 1999\, when it played at the former Mama Kins Music Hall in Boston in front of a sold out crowd of 800. Among other famous faces at that show was Steven Tyler’s daughter\, model Mia Tallarico. Steven Tyler quoted his daughter the next day as saying “Dad\, have you seen this? From where I was standing\, I couldn’t believe how much they (Draw The Line) looked and sounded just like you!” \nDraw The Line’s lead singer\, Neill Byrnes\, won a Steven Tyler look-alike contest on 107.3 WAAF\, another one of Boston’s biggest rock radio stations. Even MTV agrees to the easily mistaken identity of Steven Tyler. So MTV invited Neill to fly to New York so they could film his magical impersonation for a promotional video. The former model & actor continues to croon the classic standards of the American songbook with a passion that resonates very well with his audience. Having been trained vocally under the tutelage of professor Laurence Bogue (Juilliard School)\, Dottoli encompasses the necessary vocal disciplines of breathing\, diction and interpretation\, the necessary techniques Sinatra learned early in his career. \nBorn and raised in New Jersey\, a teenage Dottoli quickly discovered the talents of fellow New Jersey born entertainer Frank Sinatra. Thankfully\, Sinatra quickly became his mentor and study\, delivering for us a rebirth\, of sorts\, of the days of the master crooner when America was filled with live entertainment and a rage to live. \nGet your tickets here!
