SUMMARY:La Cage aux Folles at The Levoy Theatre
DESCRIPTION:La Cage aux Folles\nFebruary 11 8:00 pm \nLa Cage aux Folles\, based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret\, tells the story of a gay couple\, Georges\, the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment\, and Albin\, his romantic partner and star attraction\, and the farcical adventures that ensue when Georges’s son\, Jean-Michel\, brings home his fiancée’s ultra-conservative parents to meet them. La Cage aux Folles literally means “the cage of crazy women”. However\, folles is also a slang term for effeminate homosexuals (queens). \nOpening on Broadway in 1983\, La Cage broke barriers for gay representation by becoming the first hit Broadway musical centered on a homosexual relationship. The show’s Act One finale\, “I Am What I Am”\, received praise as a “gay anthem” and has been widely recorded. \nThe original production ran for more than four years (1\,761 performances)\, and won six Tony Awards\, including Best Musical\, Best Score and Best Book. \nThe success of the musical spawned a West End production and several international runs. The 2004 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival\, and the 2008 London revival garnered the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. The 2010 Broadway revival was nominated for eleven Tony Awards\, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. La Cage aux Folles is the first musical which has won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical twice and it has won a Best Musical Tony Award (Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical) for each of its Broadway productions. The show has garnered five nominations for Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical from its three Broadway productions\, twice for portrayers of Georges and three times for portrayers of Albin\, winning the award twice (both for actors playing Albin). \nLA CAGE AUX FOLLES is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. www.concordtheatricals.com \n

She must be able to project both toughness and charisma. She is also a woman of few options\, who uses her sexuality to build power. The actor playing this role must be a trained vocalist with strong vocal stamina and excellent control: a legit mezzo with a clear\, strong mix that can belt to a high G and sing to a low E (below middle C) who must also be a passionate and strong actor who can move well. \nChe: Lead — Vocal range: Tenor Age range: 21–35\nChe is dashing\, impulsive\, jealous\, and manipulative. He is a political activist (modelled on the actual Argentine-born Cuban guerilla fighter Che Gueverra but according to the authors\, he is only supposed to be representative of all activists). Che is the “narrator” and Greek Chorus of the show. He isn’t reluctant to ask tough questions and demand answers. He must be an actor/singer who can move very well with a high\, rock tenor voice that can sing a low A to high B\, falsetto to high F. \nJuan Perón: Lead Vocal range: Baritone Age range: 30-50\nJuan is an officer in the Argentinean army who rises\, driven by his wife Eva\, to become the Argentine President. He is a man who is dignified\, charming\, and authoritative. He should be a strong actor and singer who can play both character and leading roles. Vocal bass/baritone to high F. \nAgustin Magaldi: Featured Vocal range: Teno Age range: 30-40\nMigaldi is a tango singer with whom Eva has her first love affair. He is a charming loser who never quite made it. He has the first big number in the show\, On This Night of a Thousand Stars\, and sets up the world in which Eva exists by establishing a Latin flavor to the piece\, which is essential. He will also appear in the ensemble. He should be able to portray a Latin American “personality” type with a feel that needs to be bigger than life\, but real at the same time. Sings high tenor High G. \nPerón’s Mistress: Featured Vocal range: Mezzo-soprano Age range: 16-21\nThe Mistress is a very beautiful\, fragile\, vulnerable\, innocent young woman who plays Juan Peron’s teenaged Mistress. She is “dismissed” out of Peron’s life by his future wife\, Eva. The Mistress ponders the rejection during her featured song\, Another Suitcase in Another Hall. She will also appear in the ensemble. She must be able to move well and sing a low A to a high E. \nEnsemble: Vocal range: All ranges Age range: All ages\nFor the men\, women and children of Argentina\, we are seeking a broad range of males and females from late teens to 70s. All must have excellent singing voices in all ranges and must be able to sing in excellent harmony. All must understand the Latin temperament even if they don’t fit into the “look.” The ensemble will double in all other roles from Generals to peasants. Strong movement ability a plus. The ensemble is featured and utilized throughout the show and is integral to the telling of the story and to making this show a success. Strong singers and dancers.

SUMMARY:David Bromberg: Celebrating 50 Years of Music
DESCRIPTION:David Bromberg\nCelebrating 50 Years of Music \nJanuary 30\, 2022 @7:00 pm \nWith his 1971 self-titled Columbia Records release\, David Bromberg emerged as the wunderkind of American roots music. The disc’s compelling blend of traditional and original material\, virtuosic musicianship and iconic cover art trumpeted the arrival of a new artist possessed of audacious and uncompromising vision. Over the course of four albums for Columbia and five for Fantasy Records\, and through associations with artists like Bob Dylan\, Jerry Jeff Walker\, John Hartford\, George Harrison\, the Grateful Dead\, Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt\, Bromberg’s reputation\, repertoire and following grew exponentially. However\, the incessant demands of touring finally brought the band’s recordings and shows to an end in the early 1980’s. \nThe twenty-two year drought ended in 2006 with the release of the Grammy-nominated solo effort Try Me One More Time. Gradually tour dates were added and bandmembers assembled as David\, in 2011\, followed up Try Me with Use Me\, a typically unorthodox Brombergian effort\, partnering him with some of the most celebrated names in music – Linda Ronstadt\, Vince Gill\, Los Lobos\, Dr John\, Keb’ Mo\, John Hiatt\, Levon Helm and others – whom David asked to either write or choose songs and then produce him doing them. \nTwo more albums emerged from 2013 to 2017\, Only Slightly Mad and The Blues the Whole Blues and Nothing But the Blues\, both produced by three-time Grammy winner Larry Campbell. Recorded at Levon Helm’s Barn\, Only Slightly Mad brought the band back to David’s eclectic ‘kitchen sink’ musical philosophy\, while with The Whole Blues\, David upheld Texas fiddler Johnny Gimbel’s claim that: “There are only two songs – the Star-Spangled Banner and the Blues.” The band skipped over the ‘Banner’ and headed straight for the blues\, winning the 2017 Downbeat Critic’s Poll for Best Blues Album. \nEventually David’s band settled into its current lineup of Mark Cosgrove (guitar\, mandolin\, vocals)\, Nate Grower (fiddle\, mandolin\, guitar\, vocals)\, Josh Kanusky (drums\, vocals) and newest member\, Suavek Zaniesienko (bass\, vocals). This nucleus has performed hundreds of shows together\, traversing thousands of miles\, across the US & Canada to Europe\, Japan and Australia. With the group having attained a high level of musical telepathy\, they entered the studio in mid 2019 for a slightly different approach to record making…. \nThe new album\, Big Road\, will give Bromberg fans the most intimate portrait to date of David and the band\, musically and visually. Featuring twelve new tracks\, five hi def performance videos and a mini documentary detailing the album’s creation\, it will be released in three formats: traditional CD\, a gatefold vinyl album and a CD/DVD combo pack. In an age where recorded music has been devalued and relegated to a digital stream for smart phones\, Big Road returns the listener to the golden age of record making\, when enjoying an album was a tactile\, visual and auditory experience. Joining David’s core band are keyboardist extraordinaire Dan Walker on piano\, organ and accordion\, a stellar horn section of Bromberg regulars like Birch Johnson (trombone)\, Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet)\, Matt Koza (tenor sax) and Bob Stewart (tuba) with Larry Campbell on mandolin and pedal steel. \nWe think you’ll agree that traveling the David Bromberg Band’s Big Road is a trip work taking. \nArtist Website: https://davidbromberg.net/
