SUMMARY:From Freedom to Citizenship
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 16th\, 2016\, 3:00 P.M. \nAfrican American History Presentation \n“From Freedom to Citizenship” by Elena R. Flynn\, Esq. \nLocation: Mt. Pisgah AME Church\, 15 Yorke St.\, Salem\, NJ \n3:00 P.M.—Free and Open to the Public. \nInformation: (856) 935-5004 or www.salemcountyhistoricalsociety.com. \n  \nElena R. Flynn\, Esq. Announced as the Presenter \nfor the 13th John S. Rock Memorial Lecture \nThe Salem County Historical Society has announced that Elena R. Flynn\, Esq. will be the presenter for the 13th John S. Rock Memorial Lecture to be held on Sunday\, October 16\, 2016\, at the Mount Pisgah A.M.E. Church\, 15 Yorke Street\, Salem\, New Jersey at 3:00 P.M. The public is invited to enjoy this free educational program. \nMs. Flynn currently serves as the Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action (EEO/AA) Officer for the Superior Court of New Jersey – Cumberland/Gloucester/Salem Vicinage. In this capacity\, Flynn is responsible for daily monitoring and implementation of the Judiciary’s EEO/AA Master Plan\, which is in place to ensure equal access for applicants\, staff\, volunteers\, vendors\, and court users and maintaining a public sector workplace environment that is free of bias and discrimination and affirms the value of diversity\, inclusion\, and broad representation of the local community’s population demographics. \nAs part of the Society’s educational programming\, this lecture commemorates the life of abolitionist John Stewart Rock (1826–1866)\, teacher\, healer\, and counselor. Rock\, born in Salem County\, was a black abolitionist of national prominence\, who was well known in his time but less recognized in ours. He was the first African American to be admitted to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court on February 1\, 1865. \nThe Society continues to honor the life of this native son through this lecture series and through a special $500 John S. Rock Memorial Scholarship at the Salem Community College. Contributions from the community at large fund both commemorations through a restricted fund at the Salem County Historical Society.
