SUMMARY:Threads of Time & Wisdom: Chilean Textiles & Horse Hair Miniatures
DESCRIPTION:Threads of Time & Wisdom: Chilean Textiles & Horse Hair Miniatures \nApril 1 through November 14\, 2022\, Thursday through Sunday\, 11am to 4pm \nIn the WheatonArts Down Jersey Folklife Center\, this exhibition provides a visual comparison between traditional textiles of two indigenous communities of Latin America—the Chilean Mapuche people and the Guatemalan Maya. Both Mapuche and Maya artists create artworks about identity and cultural heritage in a modern interconnected world\, weaving ancestral knowledge and wisdom into present-day ways of life. The story of the spider who taught the first woman how to weave in the mythological past is present in both cultures. Many designs and motifs are interpreted in similar ways. However\, the creative process reflects differences in techniques and materials employed in the two different geographic regions. Revealed in the exhibition are the complex characters of Mapuche and Mayan garments with weaving patterns interpreted in the context of a broad spectrum of regional\, social\, ritual\, and aesthetic meanings and viewed from the perspective of our shared humanity. \nThe exhibition also features Chilean horsehair (crin) miniatures of religious and secular objects—flowers\, animals\, or human figures—that aim to engage viewers in a conversation about the dynamics of living traditions over time\, their social\, artistic\, and ritual messages conveyed by the artworks and by the nature of the creative process. For current hours\, tickets\, and visitor guidelines\, visit https://www.wheatonarts.org/tickets/ \nDeveloped in partnership with the Embassy of Chile to the United States\, the Foundation of the Folk and Traditional Artists in Chile\, the “Friends of the Ixchel Museum” (FOIM)\, and local collectors and artists. \nWebsite: https://www.wheatonarts.org/programs/down-jersey-folklife-program/reflections-expressions/threads-of-time-wisdom/

SUMMARY:Season of Light at Rowan University Edelman Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:Season of Light \n12/12/2021\n3:00 pm – 4:00 pm \nshop.rowan.edu \nLight up the cold dark season with a warm and bright holiday show! \nSeason of Light explores the reasons humans are so fascinated with lighting up our lives during the December holiday season. It’s an exploration of the astronomical meanings behind seasonal traditions\, including the “Star over Bethlehem”. This show traces the history and development of many of the world’s most endearing holiday customs\, all of which involve lighting up the winter season — from the burning Yule log\, sparkling Christmas tree lights and candles in windows\, to the lighting of luminarias in the American Southwest and the traditional ritual of the Hanukkah Menorah. \nDuring this 1-hour long show we will also help you identify the brightest planets and constellations visible in the sky. \nLocation:\n201 Mullica Hill Road Glassboro\, New Jersey
