DESCRIPTION:The Salem Tomato Festival is back!\nSaturday – August 21st – 11am-4pm \nThe festival is inspired by Robert Gibbon Johnson\, who as legend has it\, stood on the steps of the Salem Courthouse in the early 1800’s and ate a bushel of what was then considered to be “poison apples.” Despite what many expected\, he survived and tomatoes are now considered one of South Jersey’s many delicacies. \nStarting in the 1980’s\, Salem hosted Robert Gibbon Johnson Day\, hundreds flocked to Salem and the event was highlighted with a reenactment of Johnson’s infamous tomato eating. A lot of fondness remains for that event\, and people still love South Jersey tomatoes\, so we saw fit to bring it back.\nFood trucks\, the tremendous DJ Jason Reese\, the Best of South Jersey winning band To The Max\, and the reenactment are ready to go. There will also be an all ages art contest hosted by the Salem Art League displayed at the old Salem Courthouse\, a tomato competition and a tomato toss.\nA variety of vendors and non-profits will be lined up Market Street. Vendor spots remain open! Whether you have a brick & mortar store or you just started making things at home in the last 18 months\, we invite you to come set up a table in Salem and share what you have to offer. Non-profits of all varieties are invited as well. Applications are required for vendor and non-profit participation with all vendor fees waived if you apply before 8/8/21. DESCRIPTION:Buena Vista hosts its first National Night Out \nThe Buena Vista Township’s special events committee will mount its first National Night Out event from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday\, Aug. 3\, the Buena Regional High School parking lot\, 125 Weymouth Road. \nVisitors will be able to meet local first responders and fire\, local and state police\, EMT and forest fire service vehicles will be on display for up-close inspection. New Jersey State Police will bring K-9 units and horse patrols. \nThe Municipal Drug Alliance of Buena Borough\, Buena Vista and Weymouth townships will have a section of games and activities. Representatives from dozens of local community groups and organizations are scheduled to be on hand with information and giveaways. \nThere will be free popcorn\, cotton candy\, ice cream cones and goody bags\, while supplies last. DESCRIPTION:From August 3rd until August 20th\, teens will be able to participate in a neighborhood scavenger hunt in order to win a special prize. Teens will be able to walk along High Street in Millville with their scavenger hunt sheet (included in every summer reading registration packet) and find animals in various shop windows. They should record what they find on their sheets and bring them back by August 20 to be entered to win earbuds in a random prize drawing at our closing party on August 26. The winner must be present at the closing party to receive a prize. From August 10th until August 20th\, teens can pick up free Shrinky Dink craft kits from the library to make their own plastic charms or decorative objects. Each kit will include instructions\, two sheets of shrinky dink plastic\, a sheet of example templates\, and two keychain rings. From August 17 until August 25th teens will be able to create colorful and delicious candy “sushi” rolls at home with candy sushi kits provided by MPL! Kits may include treats such as Fruit Roll-Ups\, Rice Krispies Treats\, and Swedish Fish.
