G. Wells’s novel The War of the Worlds (1898). It was performed and broadcast live as a Halloween episode at 8 p.m. on Sunday\, October 30\, 1938\, over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. The episode became famous for allegedly causing panic among its listening audience\, though the scale of panic is disputed\, as the program had relatively few listeners. \nThe one-hour program began with the theme music for the Mercury Theatre on the Air and an announcement that the evening’s show was an adaptation of The War of the Worlds. Orson Welles then read a prologue which was closely based on the opening of H. G. Wells’ novel modified slightly to move the story’s setting to 1939. For about the next twenty minutes\, the broadcast was presented as a typical evening of radio programming being interrupted by a series of news bulletins. The first few news flashes occur during a presentation of “live” music and describe a series of odd explosions observed on Mars\, followed by a seemingly unrelated report of an unusual object falling on a farm in Grover’s Mill\, New Jersey. The musical program returns briefly before being interrupted by a live report from Grover’s Mill\, where police officials and a crowd of curious onlookers have surrounded the strange cylindrical object that fell from the sky. The situation escalates when Martians emerge from the cylinder and attack using a heat-ray\, which the panicked reporter at the scene describes until his audio feed abruptly goes dead. This is followed by a rapid series of increasingly alarming news updates detailing a devastating alien invasion taking place around the country and the futile efforts of the U.S. military to stop it. The first portion of the show climaxes with another live report from a Manhattan rooftop as giant Martian war machines release clouds of poisonous smoke across New York City. The reporter mentions in passing that Martian cylinders have landed all over the country as he describes desperate New Yorkers fleeing and “dropping like flies”\, the smoke inexorably approaching his location. Eventually he coughs and falls silent\, and a lone ham radio operator is heard mournfully calling “Is there anyone on the air? Isn’t there… anyone?” with no response. Only then did the program take its first break\, a full thirty-eight minutes after Welles’s introduction. \nThe second half of the show shifts to a conventional radio drama format which follows a survivor (played by Welles) dealing with the aftermath of the invasion and the ongoing Martian occupation of Earth. The final segment lasts for about sixteen minutes\, and as in the original novel\, it concludes with the revelation that the Martians have been defeated by microbes rather than by humans. The broadcast ends with a brief “out of character” announcement by Welles in which he cheerfully compares the show to “dressing up in a sheet\, jumping out of a bush and saying ‘Boo!’” \nWelles’s “War of the Worlds” broadcast has become famous for supposedly tricking some of its listeners into believing that a Martian invasion was actually taking place due to the “breaking news” style of storytelling employed in the first half of the show. The illusion of realism was furthered because the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a sustaining program without commercial interruptions; the first break in the drama came after Martian war machines were described as devastating New York City. Popular legend holds that some of the radio audience may have been listening to The Chase and Sanborn Hour with Edgar Bergen and tuned in to “The War of the Worlds” during a musical interlude\, thereby missing the clear introduction indicating that the show was a work of science fiction. However\, contemporary research suggests that this happened only in rare instances. \nIn the days after the adaptation\, widespread outrage was expressed in the media. The program’s news-bulletin format was described as deceptive by some newspapers and public figures\, leading to an outcry against the broadcasters and calls for regulation by the Federal Communications Commission. Nevertheless\, the episode secured Welles’s fame as a dramatist.

DESCRIPTION:Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center celebrates 22 years of artistic excellence with the Festival of Fine Craft on October 2 and 3\, rain or shine! This annual event features the work of 125 juried contemporary and traditional artists\, unique craft demonstrations\, a Beer & Wine Garden\, family art activities\, and more! Throughout the WheatonArts campus\, attendees can engage with artists exhibiting and selling their handcrafted works of art in various mediums\, such as clay\, glass\, jewelry\, leather\, textiles\, wood\, and more. \nCraft demonstrations this year include a unique hands-on Maya sawdust carpet project\, along with Guatemalan master weavers Armando Sosa and Angélica López sharing centuries-old weaving techniques. \n“Scarecrow Construction” is notably one of the favorite family activities each year\, with a wild assortment of clothing and plenty of straw to create life-size scarecrows to take home! Everyone can experience the creative process with additional complimentary art-making activities (paper bowl scarecrow faces\, tissue paper stained glass apples\, and beaded fall corn)\, thanks to a special PNC Arts Alive grant. Other fee-based artistic hands-on opportunities\, such as designing a silk scarf and basket weaving\, will be available throughout the grounds. \nCape May Brewery and Bellview Winery return to our relaxing Beer & Wine Garden environment behind an entrance wall displaying handcrafted glass goblets. Various gourmet food vendors and specialty food trucks will line the food court with refreshments for purchase. Additionally\, visitors can enjoy live musical entertainment from South Jersey’s own Package Goods\nOrchestra. For added Festival fun\, visitors can stop by the information table after entering through the gates and sign up for a chance to win a variety of WheatonArts door prizes. The Festival’s Glass Pumpkin Fundraiser will be back in a limited fashion. This outdoor installation invites attendees to browse limited-edition handcrafted glass pumpkins of all shapes\, sizes\, and colors—each individually handcrafted by WheatonArts’ resident glass artists. Located across from the Pottery Studio\, the glass pumpkins will be available for purchase\, with proceeds supporting arts educational programming at WheatonArts. Is it necessary to note that due to\ndiminished production time and staff during COVID restrictions\, the patch will be smaller than in past years\, pumpkin quantities are limited. \nFor the health and safety of our artists\, staff\, and audiences\, and based on the recommendations of the CDC\, masks must be worn indoors regardless of vaccination status. Masks will also be required outdoors when social distancing is not possible. The Festival of Fine Craft is included with general admission to WheatonArts. DESCRIPTION:FITNESS AND RELAXATION THE WATCHWORDS\nFOR A DAY OF YOGA AND SOUND HEALING\nON SEPTEMBER 25 \nTake some time out for some fitness and relaxation for Yoga and Sound Healing on The Ave\, on Saturday\, September 25\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, in the southwest mini-park\, Landis Avenue and the Boulevard\, in Vineland. The rain date for this event will be the following day at the same time. \nOrganized by Main Street Vineland\, it is an opportunity for you to connect with yourself and your fellow community members by practicing the beautiful art of yoga while absorbing colorful\, harmonic waves of sound. \nAhmad Graves-El (a.k.a. “The Lung”) will be joined by three other yoga instructors—Kim Corda\, Kristy Lively\, and Dana Pellegrino—and two sound providers—Sitarbob and Maegan Athena Quinones—for this event. \nAll classes will be 50 minutes and anyone can choose to participate in one\, two\, three\, or all of the classes. Participants are to bring mats\, blankets\, blocks\, water\, and positive vibes. \n“This is the kind of event that fits perfectly into what we want to achieve in holding “micro-events”—smaller\, specialized events—on The Ave\, making more use of our beautiful mini-parks\, and providing opportunities for people to use The Ave to keep fit and for healthy living\,” said Main Street Vineland Executive Director Russell Swanson. \nThis will also be a great opportunity to utilize our new downtown walking trails while on The Ave\, according to Main Street Vineland Associate Director Robert Scarpa. \n“While you are on The Ave\, take advantage of our newly-dedicated walking trails and make a day of it downtown. In fact\, exhibitors are limited to sponsors and businesses located within the 08085 zip code. There will be an expanded car show area\, and more opportunities for social distancing. Along with a smaller scale this year\, the event will run from 12noon- 4pm. \nThanks to the title sponsor\, Inspira Health\, there will be non-stop music on the main stage. Additionally\, their very own Swedesboro Brewing Company will host a beer garden at the north end of the car show.
