SUMMARY:Veterans Memorial Program
DESCRIPTION:34th Annual Atlantic County\nVeterans Memorial Program \nFriday\, May 25\, 2018 at 2 PM \nAtlantic County Veterans Cemetery\nAtlantic County Park • Route 50 • Estell Manor \nFeaturing Keynote Speaker\nMichael D. Schenck\nMaster Gunnery Sergeant\, Marine Corps Reserve\nAtlantic County Veterans Advisory Board Member \nAtlantic County will honor the memories of its fallen military heroes on Friday\, May 25 at 2 PM during the 34th annual Veterans Memorial Program to be held at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery located in the county park\, Route 50\, Estell Manor. \n“It is our tradition to begin each Memorial Day weekend with this special tribute to our fallen military heroes\,” stated County Executive Dennis Levinson. This holiday is especially important because as Franklin D. Roosevelt once said: ‘Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.’ In Atlantic County we will not forget nor take for granted the extreme sacrifice of generations of men and women who have bravely served our country.” \nThe program will feature the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Color Guard\, the Atlantic County Corrections Officers’ Honor Guard; the Atlantic City Fire Department Sandpipers’ Pipes and Drums\, a bugler and the presentation of the memorial wreath. \nMays Landing resident Michael D. Schenck\, Master Gunnery Sergeant in the US Marine Corps Reserves and a member of the Atlantic County Veterans Advisory Board will provide the keynote address. Schenck currently serves as a Senior Inspector for the USMCR in New Orleans where he helps to ensure the highest level of readiness\, discipline and integrity through objective internal analysis of the management\, operation and conduct of the USMCR. He is also an adjunct professor at Cumberland County College and a former high school social studies teacher. \nSchenck previously served as a Section Chief\, Team Chief\, Military to Military Chief and Innovative Readiness Training Chief in the USMCR and has earned numerous military honors and awards including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal\, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Combat Action Ribbon. \nHe attained his BA in Political Science from Stockton University\, his Master of Education from Wilmington University\, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy and Administration from Walden University. \nIn preparation for the May 25 ceremony\, several local scout troops will place American flags at approximately 5\,300 gravesites located within the veterans cemetery on Wednesday\, May 23 (rain date: Thursday\, May 24). Scouts who perform this task on at least two of three annual occasions are eligible to receive the Atlantic County Patriotism patch in recognition of their service to veterans. \nThe Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery was officially dedicated in May\,1985 to provide a final resting place for military veterans and their spouses. The cemetery was expanded in 2014 to accommodate an additional 650 plots with more property set aside for future expansion.

SUMMARY:Founders Day in Downtown Vineland
DESCRIPTION:Beginning of Transition Before Move to Palace of Depression Grounds in 2019 \nFounder’s Day\, the annual iconic salute to Vineland’s heritage sponsored by the Friends of Historic Vineland for the past 20 years\, will be making a move this year. \nThe event\, a mainstay of Vineland’s spring events calendar\, will be held on Saturday\, May 19\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, rain or shine\, at Landis MarketPlace\, 631 E. Landis Ave. All events will be on the upper level of the building. \nAfter 15 years of being held at the Elwyn School grounds\, the event begins a new era in anticipation of its 2019 permanent move to the Palace of Depression grounds on Mill Road. \nThe traditional celebratory schedule for the day will remain\, but with a new and different look. The size and scope is changed\, allowing for the expansion of the mission of teaching local history to new generations. \nSome favorite elements of Founder’s Day will be remaining—Civil War and Vineland history re-enactors\, telling stories and family games with Games By Sam—plus\, hometown arts with Magnolia Hill Studios\, select food vendors with plenty of eating space\, and free parking. \nNew this year will be a special guest—strolling illusionist and interactive family fun with Bill Kirwood. More exciting new features include an ongoing slideshow PowerPoint presentation telling The Founder’s Story\, including the founding of Vineland\, the mission of the Friends of Historic Vineland\, a preview of the restored Palace of Depression and Museum—the future long-term home of Founder’s Day beginning in 2019—and Vineland: Then and Now. \n“What a way for Main Street Vineland to join with the Friends of Historic Vineland to celebrate Charles K. Landis’s vision of a wide avenue to be the centerpiece of his model town!” said Main Street Vineland Executive Director Russell Swanson. “We urge everyone to come out to celebrate Vineland and celebrate our downtown by coming out to Founder’s Day on The Ave.” \nFor more information on Founder’s Day\, please call 856-205-9334. \nFor more information on all Main Street Vineland programs and events\, please call 856-794-8653\, visit the organization’s website at www.TheAve.biz\, or visit the organization’s Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Before the Flood Documentary
DESCRIPTION:Before the Flood Documentary\nSeating for this event will be General Admission. \nMay 16 \n7:00 pm \n$10 plus fees \nDoors: 6:00pm
Runtime: 96min
All Ages \nNational Geographic’s Before the Flood:\nIf you could know the truth about the threat of climate change — would you want to know? Before the Flood\, presented by National Geographic\, features Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey as a United Nations Messenger of Peace\, traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. He goes on expeditions with scientists uncovering the reality of climate change and meets with political leaders fighting against inaction. He also discovers a calculated disinformation campaign orchestrated by powerful special interests working to confuse the public about the urgency of the growing climate crisis. With unprecedented access to thought leaders around the world\, DiCaprio searches for hope in a rising tide of catastrophic news.\nFrom Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens and Academy Award®-winning actor\, environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio\, Before the Flood presents a riveting account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change\, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent the disruption of life on our planet. Beyond the steps we can take as individuals\, the film urges viewers to push their elected officials in supporting the use of alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power. “We need everyone to demand bold action from their political leaders and to elect representatives who have their best interests at heart\, not the interests of corporations to perpetuate a cycle of greed and destruction\,” says DiCaprio. “This documentary shows how interconnected the fate of all humanity is — but also the power we all possess as individuals to build a better future for our planet.”
