JOHN HOEY – JAZZ IN JUNE AT RICHWOOD ACADEMY CULTURAL CENTER
John Hoey and the John Hoey Trio will perform selections from the Great American Songbook for “Jazz in June” at the Richwood Academy Cultural Center on Sunday, June 2, 2024, 3 PM.
For the third year, “Jazz in June” closes out the Harrison Township Historical Society’s Spring lecture and concert series at Richwood Academy Cultural Center. This year, the Center welcomes the John Hoey Trio for an afternoon of selections from the Great American Songbook on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 3 PM, and admission is free.
John Hoey is a diverse entertainer and triple-threat performer on trumpet, guitar and voice. He has been working on the jazz scene from an early age and has established himself as one of the youngest interpreters of the Great American Songbook today. Through his studies at Rowan University he has enjoyed the opportunity to perform with many great artists including Rufus Reid and the John Pizzarelli Trio. John will be joined by Ben Kornak on drums and Charles Ford on bass.
The Great American Songbook encompasses the popular and enduring tunes from roughly the 1920s to the mid-century. This timeless music came to form the core repertoire of jazz musicians during that time period and continues to be so to the present day. Standards include works by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, and Cole Porter, among others, that continue to be fresh and open to both classic and new interpretations.
Sunday’s concert continues the Historical Society’s partnership with Rowan University’s College of Performing Arts that showcases outstanding young musicians from the college.
“These performing opportunities are a valuable experience for the musicians and presenters,” notes Dr. Richard Dammers, Dean of the College of Performing Arts.
The programs also provide exciting opportunities to showcase the talent of these young, emerging artists.
A selection of works by visual artists from the University will also be on view in the Academy. The afternoon promises to be a treat for both eyes and ears.
The Richwood Academy Cultural Center is located at 836 Lambs Road, Richwood, NJ. Free tickets and information are available at HarrisonHistorical.com and the Society’s public Facebook page where the lecture will be livestreamed and archived.
The Harrison Township Historical Society’s arts and history programs are made possible in part by funding from the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission at Rowan College of South Jersey in partnership with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State and the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey Historical Commission/Department of State.
