Salem County Short Line!
The Salem County Freeholder Board is pleased to announce a celebration of the Salem County Short Line. Ideal for freight transportation, the rail runs from Swedesboro to Salem City Port.
“This has been a cooperative project over the past few years, requiring the dedication of freeholders and local government officials, past and present,” says Freeholder Director, Ben Laury. “It is a great thing for our County to celebrate together.”
Steeped in County history, the Salem Railroad was first incorporated in 1856. The line was built to meet the Swedesboro to Woodbury rail and in 1883 freight first passed all the way to Salem City. The County has owned the line since 1985.
Upgrades to the Salem City portion, finished in November of 2018 ensure the rail as part of the County’s future. Today, once again, there is easy passage from Swedesboro and points north, all the way to the Port of Salem, a Foreign Trade Zone and ocean port.
Join us on May 14, 2019 at 10 am at Fifth & Ward Streets to celebrate. Light refreshments served.
“We are excited to celebrate the rail and the additional business asset this brings to Salem County,” remarks Charles V. Hassler, Freeholder Liason for Economic Development.
