Salem County Unveils New Stone Wall Sign at Veterans Cemetery
County officials, veterans and members of the community gathered to honor fallen Veterans at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park sign unveiling on Wednesday, July 18, 2018.
Joseph Hannagan, director of Veterans Affairs, raised the funds to complete the two new stone wall signs, which will identify the cemetery at each entrance.
“These signs are another way to preserve the grounds and honor all departed veterans who are laid to rest at the cemetery,” stated freeholder director Melissa DeCastro. “It is humbling to stand on these grounds and we should always remember those who served our country and fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. . . . We thank all who made this possible.”
The two stone signs were designed by Hannagan and Astro Signs. The stone walls to hold the signs were constructed by Marty Demaris. Six military emblems were created by the Salem County Vocational-Technical School CADD/ Graphic Program and Welding Program students. These emblems represent those who served in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines.
The project was funded entirely through donations totaling more than $12,000.Some 2,870 veterans and spouses are buried in the cemetery. There are 2,000 plots available, which should be enough space to sustain 40 years. Brick pavers continue to be sold to create the brick walkway.
