THRIVE South Jersey Grantee 13th Child Brewery Hosts Grand Opening
13th Child Brewery, a brand-new brewery on Main Street in Williamstown, celebrated its Grand Opening on, none other than, Friday, April 13th! The brewery, cleverly named in homage to the Jersey Devil, is the result of a partnership of 3 friends who share a passion for microbrews. Their story is like many start-up businesses; however, theirs may not have come to fruition if it weren’t for a grant from New Jersey Community Capital’s THRIVE South Jersey initiative in partnership with Pascale Sykes Foundation.
The 13th Child Brewery owners planned to renovate an old bank in Williamstown but keep the facade intact. With the building picked out and the business plan in place, they just needed the funding to actually start the business. After being told “no” at several banks, the owners were discouraged and deflated. Then they found out about THRIVE South Jersey.
During an interview with SNJ News, THRIVE South Jersey program manager Laura Wallick said, “We were able to fund 13th Child Brewery and help fund the renovations to this facility, help them with the acquisition of the brewing equipment and provide some general working capital to start the business.”
And 13th Child Brewery is just the tip of the iceberg for the THRIVE South Jersey initiative. New Jersey Community Capital is looking to help more businesses the same way.
“We have $900,000 in financing available to emerging businesses, startup businesses, that are seeking to expand in the region and we welcome opportunities to speak with any business,” said Wallick. Highlighting the importance of shopping local, eating local and opening up local businesses, Wallick continued, “They create job opportunities for area residents and they really help stimulate local economies and, with that, they really help strengthen neighborhoods.”
